How to Talk to Your Child Before They Get Braces
Getting braces is a big step for a child. As a parent, how you talk about orthodontic treatment can make a big difference in how your child feels going into it. Here are a few tips to help guide you through those conversations:
Keep It Positive and Simple
Start by explaining that braces are there to help their teeth grow into the right position. Talk about what their smile will look like when treatment is done. Let them know they will need to go in for regular check-ups and adjustments, but you will be there with them for each appointment.
Encourage Questions
Give your child space to ask anything that is on their mind, even if it seems small. Answer honestly, but calmly. Reassure them it is okay to ask questions, both with you and with Dr. Visconti too.
Normalize Braces
Mention the names of friends, family, or even celebrities who have had braces. If you or an immediate family member had braces growing up, consider showing them photos. Seeing photos of people they know with braces on can help them to visualize what braces will look like, while also normalizing the experience.
Prepare Them for New Habits
Once they have their braces on, remind them they now have new responsibilities in caring for their braces, but frame it as something you know they can handle. Talk to them about avoiding sticky or hard foods and make sure they understand new brushing routines.
The conversations you have with your child can shape their entire experience. With encouragement, honesty, and a positive outlook, you can help them get started on their orthodontic journey feeling prepared and confident.
