Helping Your Child Take Ownership of Their Orthodontic Care
As a parent, you know that proper braces care is important for keeping your child’s treatment on track. But constantly reminding them to brush, floss, and avoid the wrong foods can feel like you’re stuck on repeat.
The good news? With a few smart strategies, you can help your child take ownership of their orthodontic care and save yourself from sounding like a broken record.
- Let Their Phone Do the Reminding
Most kids and teens keep their phones nearby at all times. Take advantage of that! Set daily reminders for brushing after breakfast, after school, and before bed. Add a quick lunchtime floss reminder if they’re at school. You can even use fun alarm tones to make it feel less like a chore.
- Create a Braces Care Station
Make it easy for them to do the right thing by setting up a small “braces care kit” at home with everything they need:
- Toothpaste
- Floss
- A mirror for checking brackets and wires
If they can grab everything in one spot and it’s in a location they are in often, they’re more likely to do it without prompting.
- Make It a Challenge
Turn braces care into a game or goal. You could create a sticker chart for every day they brush and floss without reminders and then offer small rewards like getting a special snack or getting to choose the family movie when they’ve done a great job.
- Pack a Portable Kit for School and Sports
Encourage them to keep a small braces care kit in their backpack or sports bag. That way, they can clean their teeth after lunch, snacks, or games without waiting until they get home.
- Make Sure They Understand the “Why”
Kids are much more likely to follow through if they understand the reason behind the rules. Explain how keeping their braces clean prevents stains, cavities, and extra time in treatment.
Encouraging your kids to take care of their braces doesn’t have to mean endless nagging. By making it easy, fun, and part of their daily routine, you’ll help them take ownership of their smile and ensure their braces journey stays on track.
