Dealing With A Broken Bracket
If you or your child has braces, a broken bracket can feel alarming, but there is no need for concern. Broken brackets are actually a very common issue we see, and in most cases, they are easy to manage.
What Does a Bracket Actually Do?
Brackets are the small metal or ceramic attachments bonded to each tooth during orthodontic treatment. They work together with the wire to gently guide your teeth into their correct positions over time. Because they are attached directly to your teeth and work under pressure, brackets can occasionally loosen or break.
What Should You Do If One Breaks?
If a bracket breaks, the first step is simple: call our office at 705-268-8400. We’ll let you know whether you need to come in right away or if it can wait until your next appointment.
What If It Breaks on a Weekend or Holiday?
Most broken brackets can be easily handled at home. Here are a few things you can do until our office reopens:
-If the bracket is loose but still comfortable, leave it alone
-If the bracket is irritating your cheek or gums, place orthodontic wax over it
-Be even more cautious with what you eat until it’s repaired
-Do not try to cut the wire or remove the bracket on your own
Broken brackets can be frustrating, but they are a normal part of orthodontic treatment. Have questions? Call our office at 705-268-8400, we are here to help keep your orthodontic treatment on track!
