Questions Kids Frequently Ask
Starting orthodontic treatment can be exciting for kids, but it can also bring up a lot of questions. The good news is with simple and honest answers you can help them to feel confident every step of the way.
Here are some common questions kids ask about orthodontics and how you as a parent can answer them!
Question: “Will getting braces hurt?”
Answer: “Braces don’t hurt when they go on, but your teeth may feel a little sore for a day or two after you get adjustments made. This discomfort is just your teeth getting used to moving, just like when you try a new sport and your muscles are achy after. The good news is the feeling goes away quickly.”
Question: “How long will I have braces?”
Answer: “Everyone’s smile is different, so your timeline won’t be the exact same as someone else. The average time in braces is 2-3 years. You can help your treatment stay on track by brushing well and avoiding sticky foods.”
Question: “What happens if one of my wires or brackets breaks?”
Answer: “If something feels loose, pokes you, or breaks, just tell us right away. It’s not an emergency, but we will help to make sure it is fixed as soon as possible.”
Kids do best when they understand what is happening and why. By answering their questions, you help take away the fear of the unknown.
