Halloween
Halloween is almost here. The decorations are up, the costumes are ready, and candy bowls everywhere are calling your name. We know how tempting it is to dive into your trick-or-treat haul, especially when everyone else around you is enjoying those chewy sweets. But if you have braces, there’s a good reason we recommend skipping certain treats. And no, it’s not because we want to ruin your fun!
We want your treatment to stay on track and your smile to stay healthy and a little bit of caution now can save you from discomfort, broken brackets, or even having to spend extra months with your braces on.
Braces are strong, but certain candies can put them to the test. Here’s why some Halloween favorites are risky:
-Sticky candies (caramels, taffy, etc): These can cling to your brackets and wires, making them hard to clean off.
-Hard candies (lollipops, jawbreakers): One bite can break a bracket or bend a wire, which means an unexpected trip to our office.
-Chewy candies (licorice, gummy worms): Like sticky candies, they pull on your brackets and can loosen them.
-Popcorn balls: The kernels can easily get stuck between your teeth and braces, and biting into them can damage your orthodontic hardware.
A broken bracket or bent wire isn’t just uncomfortable, it can delay your treatment progress. Every time we need to repair something, it can push the date you get your braces off further away. Don’t worry there are still plenty of treats you can enjoy safely! Some examples include:
-Soft chocolate bars (like milk chocolate or peanut butter cups)
-Melt-in-your-mouth chocolates without nuts
-Soft cookies or brownies
-Ice cream treats
-Cupcakes or cake
-M&Ms
Enjoying these options means you can still celebrate without putting your braces at risk. So go ahead, enjoy the season! Just remember to make smart choices, brush well, and keep your smile safe!
